Fostering Christmas Traditions

19th December, 2022

The poignant John Lewis Christmas advert this year has got all of the team thinking here at Foster Care UK. We so appreciated seeing fostering depicted in a positive way. We have seen many times the extraordinary things that our foster carers will do to support a child to feel more comfortable in their home.

We got to wondering, what wonderful things have foster children in bought into the fostering home?

We reached out to our carers and asked the question; what Christmas Traditions have foster children brought into their home?

They certainly did not disappoint; their traditions warmed our hearts.

“We started Elf on the Shelf. But we are always sure to say they are a cheeky elf, not naughty. They get up to all sorts of mischief like having a disco, or eating all of the quality street!”

Sounds like so much fun.

We also loved some of the thoughtful traditions that have been bought into the home through fostering.

“Every year we take our young people to the shops, and they get to choose their own bauble which goes on the tree, and is something that is theirs to take when they move on.”

We adore this tradition as sometimes looked after children have very little that they can call their own. So thoughtful.

As well as traditions that take us bought a tear to our eye.

“We will choose a bauble together, in memory of someone in their family who has passed away in the previous year to hang on the tree.”

Another of our foster carers, told us how they teach their entire family about giving back to the wider community.

“We all get together and bake cakes and cookies and give them to family and others in the local community. It is important us to teach all of the young people about the importance of giving.”

Such an important message at Christmas in our opinion.

We so loved hearing all the traditions from our fostering families. Fostering a child may not always be an easy path, but at times like Christmas it really goes to show how enriching it can be for both child and fostering family.
