Fostering in Sussex

FosterCare UK have been making a difference to the lives of children and young people by supporting foster carers for over 10 years.

Fostering with FosterCare UK

FosterCare UK is an independent fostering agency, with an office based in Shoreham-by-Sea . This means that we work with local authorities across the South East of England to provide high-quality fostering services in Sussex when the authorities own supply of foster carers isn’t large enough to meet demand.

With over 10,000 children in care across the South East and London, we work in partnership with local authorities, from Brighton & Hove Council and Surrey Council to London Borough of Southwark Council and Croydon, to place children with our foster carers and their families to provide a secure and stable home.

At FosterCare UK we have 50 carers and working with our expert staff, we have recently been rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted. This is a great achievement and a testament to way in which we work togethrer to make a difference to children and youg people's lives.

As part of the FosterCare UK family, you are supported with expert guidance and advice, as well as training and support, 24/7 365 days a year.

As a foster carer, you and your family have access to support groups which provides you with the opportunity to get to know other foster carer in our family and we also have time for fun! Steve Blackwood

Steve Blackwood

Area Director - South

It is now over 34 years that I have worked within the childcare sector both with the local authority and the independent sector and especially in the fostering arena.  I have been fortunate to work across the UK in Scotland(where I lived for nearly two years), Wales and Southern Ireland as well as working and living  in America and Canada which were great experiences and allowed me to share some of the work and initiatives in the UK within these start up operations. It seems a very long time ago since I qualified as a social worker in 1994. I have always had a passion to enable young people to achieve their potential whatever that maybe and this is still something I feel very strongly about after all these years.

I have now worked for Capstone for over 4 years having started as the Regional Director for the South East in 2018 and two years ago becoming the Area Director for the South Hub which includes Capstone South West, Capstone South East and FosterCare UK. I am extremely proud to have a fantastic group of foster carers and staff that work tirelessly to ensure that the children and young people placed with us have a positive experience and are able to live fulfilling lives, while ensuring we have fun along the way. I have never failed to be amazed by the fantastic work that our foster carers do across the whole company.

Our aim is to provide a high level, quality service and our teams work in partnership with all those involved in the lives of the children to enable the best possible outcome for them.

Outside of work, I am a volunteer for a charitable organisation that also helps children and young people aspire to achieve,  I enjoy leisure activities when I get chance, travelling and spending time with my family.

Registered Manager

I graduated from Zaragoza University in 1992 and went to work in Domestic Abuse and Children in Need until 2000, when I moved to the UK.

Between 2006 and 2010, I was employed by Single Homeless Project in London.  There, I created a programme for people returning to employment after a long period of time in prison or when they were involved in drug abuse for many years.  After four years I moved to work for Kent County Council as a Senior Social Worker in the Children in Need team and the Fostering Service.  In my last year working for the Local Authority, I was a LADO (Local Authority Designated Officer) until I happily moved to join FosterCare UK’s big family in November 2018.

Fostering Recruitment Advisor

I have worked for FosterCare UK for over 7 years now. With no previous fostering experience I was hired as admin help for the social workers, then as my knowledge and passion for fostering grew I progressed in the business. I now work as the Fostering Recruitment Adviser which I absolutely love. I get to spend my days building relationships with some amazing families and helping them achieve their goal to become foster carers!

Area Placement Manager - South Hub

My role is to support the placement teams in the South West, South East and Foster Care UK. I joined Capstone in November 2020 and have worked within the independent fostering sector since 2004. During that time, I have covered a range of roles, but have always navigated back to placements. This role allows me to support our placement teams consider whether we have a suitable vacancy for our foster carers. I am able to work with our Local Authority colleagues and understand the needs of the young people they’re placement finding for. Our aim to offer and provide safe, robust and nurturing placements to young people who need them. There is no better feeling that learn how well a young person is flourishing in a placement you’ve supported making.

Senior MATTS Referrals Co-Ordinator

I began working for Foster Care UK in 2015 and over my time with the company I have held various roles and, by doing so, have developed a thorough understanding of the various elements that contribute toward the fostering sector.  Currently, I work within our Placements team, coordinating and matching the referrals received for young people in care to those that foster with us.  I am responsible for the matching of each placement within our Agency and ensuring the best suited package for both the young person and the Carer is agreed upon, and in place, for when a placement were to commence.  I work closely alongside our Therapeutic Service team, identifying the needs of the young people being referred to our agency and developing our service, to ensure that we, at Foster Care UK can offer stable, therapeutic and bespoke placements for the Local Authorities, the young people and those who foster with us.

Referrals Coordinator

I recently joined Foster Care UK after working at a primary school as a Parent Support Advisor and Designated Safeguarding Lead for 8 years. Using the information and skills learnt from this role, I decided to make the move into fostering and now work as the Referrals Coordinator. The role involves the matching and placing of children/young people with our foster carers, to achieve positive and successful placements for all. It is an interesting and varied role, and I am very pleased to be part of the Foster Care UK team.
