Solveig and Josh

Having grown up among many families who have been involved in adoption or fostering, I knew it was always something I wanted to do. When I met my husband Josh I found that he had also had some similar experiences in his life, so with the support of our friends and family we decided to take the plunge. We got in contact with FosterCare UK and in August 2019 we were finally approved as foster carers.

My experience as a nanny gave me some fantastic transferable skills, although I have now stopped working to make time for fostering. Josh didn’t have the same experience in childcare and he continues to work, but the Skills to Foster training and pre-approval courses we attended prior to panel helped teach him the basic skills he needed to feel confident to foster.

We have so far completed some respite placements with some lovely young people which we have found really rewarding. One was a week-long placement with a teenager and the other was a three day placement with an almost teenager. Each were very different as the character of the two children couldn’t have been more diverse. The first placement was very calm and the only worry was that the teenager was quite withdrawn, the second placement was shorter but more challenging as there were security issues. Both placements were quite a learning curve for me, but in a positive sense.

When the first young person arrived at our door, I remember feeling nervous and anxious. The long-term foster carers of the respite placements we had were very supportive, approachable and kept in touch during the placement making sure that everybody was alright. FosterCare UK as well as our SSW (supervising social worker were very helpful, present and available for questions before and during the placements which helped a lot.

I find fostering enriches my life and that the best part about it is the sense that it enables us to help children who had a really rough start in life. Then having a foster child stay with us and seeing the child appreciate little things brings me so much joy.

We have had some exceptional support from FosterCare UK which was shown through reassuring and encouraging us to always call if there are any questions. Our questions before the placements started were answered quickly and our SSW took the time to inform and reassure us, go through procedures etc.

We would 100% recommend FosterCare UK to our family and friends. All contact with FosterCare UK has been positive, very friendly and encouraging. I have always felt informed, appreciated and well prepared throughout the assessment process, panel and during our short placements. The training provided was good and I like the fact that Foster Care UK has its own MATS team to support us and the children we care for.
